Ford Picks Battery Maker Azure Dynamics
Dropping former partner Smith Electric Vehicles, Ford Motor Co. (F) will now estabish partnership with Azure Dynamics Corp. (AZD) to produce a battery-electric version of its Transit Connect commercial vehicle.
" Both Ford and Smith agreed to end our joint project," Ford spokeswoman Jennifer Moore told Dow Jones Newswires Friday. "While both companies are committed to the success of their electric-vehicle product lines, it became clear our companies were pursuing different markets."
Ford's Transit Connect battery electric vehicle will be the first of four electrified vehicles the auto maker plans to introduce over the next three years in Canada and the U.S. .
"The Transit Connect is slated to debut in 2010 with the project remaining on schedule." Moore said, Ford had picked Smith in February.The firm is a subsidiary the U.K.-based Tanfield Group PLC (TAN.LN).
Next-generation hybrid vehicle and a plug-in hybrid in 2012 will follow the introduction of a battery-electric Ford Focus in 2011 .
The Oak Park,Mich-based Azure Dynamics develops electric drive and hybrid electric technology for shuttle buses and commercial trucks. The new deal with Azure Dynamics will also allow Ford to tap into Azure's battery-making experience with Johnson Control Inc.
Ford shares fell 1.4% or 10 cents to $7.20 in earlier trading Friday. The company will report the third-quarter earnings Monday.

Panasonic decides to reduce stake in Toyota hybrid-battery JV
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported in its Thursday morning edition that Panasonic (6752.TO) has decided to reduce its stake in a hybrid car battery-making joint venture with Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) without citing sources.
The paper said Panasonic's planned merger with Sanyo Electric Co. (6764.TO) would give a market share in nickel hydride batteries of around 80% to both parts .What is more, Panasonic has decided to reduce its share in
Shizuoka prefecture-based Panasonic EV Energy Co.so as to speed merger approval from ongoing anti-trust investigations in the U.S. and China.
Panasonic currently holds 40% of the joint venture, with Toyota holding the remainder. How much Panasonic would sell is still unvealed.
A similar move was made by Sanyo yesterday that they announced to sell part of its battery operations to Fujitsu Ltd. unit FDK Corp.
